Department of Defense Zero Trust Strategy – Overview and Xage Coverage

By July 10, 2024 No Comments

Author: Xage Security Government Team

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has committed to adopting a zero-trust cybersecurity framework by the end of fiscal year 2027. This strategy is intended to protect DoD information systems, cloud services, operational technology, and assure data security among DoD agencies and Defense Industrial Base (DIB) partners. These agencies and contractors will be required to demonstrate adherence to an extensive list of zero trust capabilities, laid out in the DoD Zero Trust Roadmap.

The roadmap for achieving this is divided into seven pillars, containing 152 activities. 91 of the activities are considered “Target Level” which forms the baseline requirements that must be achieved by September 30, 2027. The other 61 are considered Advanced Zero Trust activities, which must be achieved by 2032.

The seven pillars in the DoD Zero Trust Strategy, along with their target level and advanced level activities, are depicted in the DoD-produced chart below.
