EPIC Midstream Achieves ROI in Three Months with Xage

Formed in 2017, EPIC Midstream owns and operates midstream infrastructure, including 800 miles of pipeline, across Texas and New Mexico. EPIC transports oil for four of the top five producers in Texas.

By leveraging the Xage Fabric Platform, EPIC Midstream has enhanced its cybersecurity posture, met stringent regulatory requirements, and significantly improved the productivity of its workforce. The choice to use Xage was driven by an initiative at EPIC to overhaul its cybersecurity framework. The initiative was led by the security team, with participation from IT, operations, measurement, automation, instrumentation, and ultimately board-level oversight.

EPIC likes that Xage security takes a unique approach to zero trust access and protection. The distributed architecture and simple user interface made it easy for employees to access the systems that they needed from anywhere. Whether on site, at HQ, or from the comfort of their home, users experience the same interface and access, cutting down on the need to learn multiple systems or circumvent security. Furthermore, Xage allowed EPIC to consolidate policy management across the entire enterprise – from information technology (IT), operational technology (OT), and cloud – into a central engine.

Key achievements include:

  • Rapid Deployment and ROI: The Xage Fabric Platform was up and running within one hour during the proof of concept phase, where other platforms took three to five days to set up. After deployment, EPIC experienced complete ROI with Xage in just three months. The broad applicability of the Xage platform allowed EPIC to avoid procurement of point solutions.
  • Enhanced Security and Compliance: Xage’s flexible platform allowed EPIC to expand the protection use cases across the cloud-first environment – resulting in greater cyber resilience. Xage’s cybersecurity mesh approach ensured high availability and compliance with the TSA Security Directive without the need for replacing existing operational technology.
  • Productivity Boost: Xage’s user-friendly approach minimizes disruptions, allowing EPIC employees to access necessary systems seamlessly. The centralized policy management and microsegmentation capabilities reduced the complexity of managing security policies and decreased reliance on expensive OEM contracts. Additionally, the ease of administration of Xage allowed EPIC to reduce management overhead – both of in-house employees and with third-party vendors.

“Xage has paid for itself in the first three months of deployment. Now that I’m saving money with it, my only concern is wondering how I can get more of it in my environment. Once I began working with it, I soon realized how broadly applicable it could be across EPIC’s entire environment. I have not found something that I cannot protect with Xage. And believe me, I’ve tried.”  – Mark Forsythe, Senior Infrastructure Architect, EPIC
